A Colorful Way to Manage Lymphedema

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Leading compression therapy garment manufacturer Juzo is proud to announce its latest innovation – The Juzo DreamSleeve Collection, colorful arm sleeves that help breast cancer survivors, who have developed lymphedema.

“In the past, most manufacturers have focused primarily on medical utility, developing arm sleeves that simply do what they’ve been designed to do – help manage a patient’s lymphedema,” said Greg Biddulph, Product Manager for Juzo, located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. “Our focus has always included making compression garments as breathable and comfortable as possible. Now we’ve added a whole new dimension to that – fashion. Patients suffering from lymphedema who wear colorful DreamSleeves can feel less self-conscious about their condition by ‘wearing a fashion accessory,’ rather than a medical garment.’”

Lymphedema is the swelling of the body’s upper extremities that can occur after certain medical treatments or procedures, such as a mastectomy, lumpectomy, radiation treatment, lymph node removal, surgeries, infections, or trauma to the limbs. Lymphedema affects the lymphatic vessels, which are responsible for transporting protein-rich lymph fluid back into the circulatory system. When these vessels are unable to transport this fluid properly, a build-up occurs, resulting in swelling and the thickening of the skin.

DreamSleeves come in a variety of sizes and compressions, and currently are available in pink, lavender and sky blue. Biddulph says “more colors may be added based on consumer feedback given by visiting juzodreamsleeve.com”.

For more information on how to mange lymphedema, or the proper use of compression therapy garments, patients should consult a primary care provider.
